Option 2: Who is A Progressive?

By definition, progressivism is a political philosophy that pushes for social reform.

Progressivism is grounded on the idea that progress and advancements in technology, science, social organization, and economic development are crucial to the current and future improvement in the human condition (LOC, 2018). The movement driven by progressives became more prominent during the age of enlightenment across Europe, due to the belief that the people of the European world demonstrated progress in the area of civility, by strengthening the foundations of knowledge (LOC, 2018).

The Characteristics of a Progressives According to Roosevelt

Theodore Roosevelt, one of America’s past presidents lived between 1858 and 1919. He served as the 26th president of the US between the years 1901 and 1909 and made major contributions to the American political philosophy, thinking, and views (Roosevelt & Hutner, 2014). According to him, the title of a progressive befits anyone optimistic about life, considers the possibility of progress real, and is willing to solve problems along the way. Further, he maintained that a progressive is committed to and passionate about change, which is the sure way to bring change about (LOC, 2018). He also added that progressives are the people that offer exceptional services, including voluntarily, and are also willing to employ government resources and authority to transform the society around them, to improve it. Roosevelt felt that the progressive does not abuse the power given to them, for example, by using it for self-benefit.
